At the 2015 Olive Exposium, Dr Rodney Mailer, spoke about ‘Adulteration and the impacts of what you are putting in your bottle’.
Following on from this presentation is an in-depth workshop delving deeper into what can go wrong post harvest.
Dr Rodney Mailey retired from NSW DPI in Wagga, NSW where he had developed and managed Australia’s largest specialist olive oil testing laboratory. During that time he undertook research studies to understand the effects of processing, harvest timing and packaging on olive oil quality. The Australian Olive Association’s (AOA) now undertakes routine market surveys of EVOO and between September 2011 and April 2015 it was found that 66% of olive oils tested were of Extra Virgin standard. On the flip side, 34% of Australian Olive Oil is not meeting the mark. This is a staggering number considering the modern industry and knowledge available to Australian producers. More needs to be done to help growers and/or processors in Australia who are not achieving maximum quality to raise the bar from good post-harvest processing through to packaging.
